My family and I had the recent pleasure of testing out a set of My Pole-ish Horseshoes (MPH). If you’ve never heard of the game…don’t feel bad…neither had we! But as it turns out, this game is a blast for kids of all ages (see the picture of my “product testers” below ;-).
Here’s a summary of what we found…
Construction / Durability:
This set is unlike many others in that it’s built to last. The pieces are easy to assemble and made of schedule 40 PVC (the good stuff). We’ve had other PVC games (hockey nets, ‘horse balls’, etc..) that opted for the cheaper / thinner PVC and lasted us less than 1 season?! I applaud makers of MPH for making a game set that will last.
The stand (pictured at the right) can be used on pavement, grass, mulch, sand…and still stands nice and upright. Because it’s made of the sturdier PVC pipe, it doesn’t need to be weighted down at all. Unlike games with stakes, this set can be used easily in a multitude of environments. It’s also worth noting that my youngest “product tester” (3 years-old) decided to pummel the set with a basketball periodically and it didn’t harm a thing (aside from ‘rattling’ my other more competitive “product testers”).
My Pole-ish Horseshoes – The Game:
The game of My Pole-ish Horseshoes is a lot of fun. We played 2 on 2 and 1 on 1 and modified the rules, as needed. Simply put, the object of the game is to try to knock off the can from the top of the pole with the Frisbee. The set comes with a nicely-weighted frisbee and a printed set of the rules. The pipe fits perfectly into the aluminum crown of a 12-ounce beverage can (pictured to the left). On one very windy afternoon, we had to add some sand to the cans for ballast, but on a normal day this was not needed.
Points are awarded or avoided (depending on your team’s vantage point) for hitting the can, catching the can, catching / dropping the Frisbee, or short throws. With the kids, we made it real simple: Can & Frisbee hit the ground – 2 points (less a point for each that you catch). Depending on the age of the players, it’s a very versatile game to make the rules fit the group.
Best part of all: The whole family enjoyed it! It’s safe (no heavy objects being hurled at each other). It’s simple enough that the kids could set it up on their own. And it’s addicting…the kids have been having blast and really have honed their Frisbee-throwing skills (much better than playing video games on the couch!).
The game is a lot of fun for the whole family and a quality set for BBQ, camping, beach, and other fun outdoor gatherings. It’s a bit on the pricey side at $60-$65 per set (purchase through MPH site), however it’s built to last. I’ve found myself buying cheap croquet sets, volleyball sets, and other outdoor games…only to find that they barely last 1 season…this one is sturdy, simple to assemble & store…and should last us a long, long time.
It’s clear to me that MPH will be the life of the party at whatever outdoor event it’s brought out.
2016 Update: It’s been 7 years since I’ve written this review and took the picture below. We’ve had a blast with this game over the years! Our 4 boys (below) and their cousins have a tournament every summer during vacation (Aunts & Uncles, too!). The durability and entertainment value of this game have not diminished one bit – Our family LOVES this game!!
